Two Wicker Chairs

Matched pair of Victorian wicker chairs made by the Wakefield Reed Chair Company, Wakefield Mass (see photo of label on bottom).   They have four twisted string (made of reed) decorated  finials on the top with an arch between.  The backs are hand woven in the star pattern.  Each chair has a hip rest on the side and original brass caps on the feet.  The seats are the typical machine woven construction.  These chair were primarily woven by women in the later part of the 19th century.    The labor was intensive.  Many hours went into this fine work – especially the star caning on the backs.  An extensive and interesting history of the Wakefield Company can be found at this link:    Both functional and decorative.   Circa:  1870.     Condition:   Wonderful original condition with a rich honey colored patina.    There is some very minor staining to the wooden seats.   Two small strips of the star caning on one back is missing.   Dimensions:   36″ H   x   20″ W   x   21″ D.    Price:  $1150 Pair.
