Oversized solid oak seven drawer gentleman’s chest with a
lock bar on the right side. It sports a
very impressive carved shaped gallery on
top with returns. The top two drawers
have a serpentine shaped fronts with applied carvings. The drawers have the original brass
hardware. The right side bale on the
bottom drawer has been replaced. The hardware could be polished but we are
offering it with the original dark tarnish.
There are double beveled and raised panels on each side. The chest rest on large bun feet. This piece is very well constructed with all
the drawers in fine functional condition.
The key works the lock on the side.
These locks were originally intended to keep the maid from getting into
the gents’ belongings. We normally find
these “lockside” chest in cherry, walnut or mahogany. They are a great rarity in oak!
