Herter Rosewood Chair

Beautifully carved rosewood Victorian chair attributed to Herter Brothers NY.  It is asymetrical with an elegant design that has an arm on only one side.  The end of the arm features a carved dog face.  The entire frame is intricately carved with  repeating pattern – something that was usually incorporated into Herter’s pieces.  It has castors signed on one side ”India Rubber Comb Co” (see photo).  The other side we find the number “14″ which is the gauge of the wheel.  These were used on many Herter pieces and a discussion of them can be found on page 123 of Herter Brothers Furniture and Interiors for a Guilded Age.  The chair was recently reupholstered by the previous owner and the fabric is in very presentable condition.  As you might expect from rosewood, this chair is very solid and heavy.  A great piece by the premier furniture maker of the period!   Circa  1880.   Dimensions:  32″H   x   25″W    x   28″D.   Condition:  Very nice original finish with a dark rich patina.  Good solid frame.   Price:  $2850
