Durfee #20 Clock

Majestic solid mahogany Pattern #18 grandfather clock made by Walter H. Durfee, Providence, R.I.  It is pictured on page 151 of Longcase Clocks and Standing Regulators by Tran Duy Ly.  The only slight variations are the side columns which on this clock are rope twist (like the clock pictured on page 155).  I  think the rope twist columns are more attractive than the more simple reeded ones.  A series of five raised beveled panels, of various sizes, adorn each side, with ornate brass capitals on the tops and bottoms.  Intricately carved moldings decorate the various parts of the case with a concaved horizontal carving under the hood.  There is a chip out of one of the bottom moldings on the right hand side (see photo).  Well defined claw feet are in the front base.   Both doors have beveled glasss and the bottom one has a carved fan at the top.  Notice the fancy original brass key escucheons on the two doors.  The movement is signed Durfee on the back of the moon dial  and double signed on top of movement(see photos).  It is a high grade three weight brass movement that plays Westminster or Whittington chimes.  The tubes are signed Walter Durfee and are dated 1887 (see photo).  The revolving moon dial has a painted moon and ship motif.   A wonderful clock, made by the premier Victorian tall clock maker of the period – in a classic design!   Circa: 1895 Dimensions: 102″H x 28″W (base)   x 17″D Finish:   Good original finish with a superb rich patina.  The brass dial and silvering on the face is in great original condition, having never been polished.    I had the movement overhauled and cleaned.  This is something that usually is done every 50 years.  Price: $21,500.                            CLEARANCE SALE PRICE:   $14,500cl1 cl13cl18 cl19cl17 cl2cl4 cl5 cl6cl7 cl8cl11 cl12 cl9 cl10 cl11002
